MESA
In July of 1999 a concerned group of citizens came together to create the Magnuson Environmental Stewardship Alliance (MESA) for the express purpose of restoring the 20-acre Promontory Point section of Warren G. Magnuson Park. For decades this area of the Sand Point Naval Air Station was used for various purposes, including a runway, firing range, mechanics area, and hidden bunkers. Given over to the city in 1976 for the creation of a park, invasive species of ivy, clematis, holly, and hawthorne slowly started taking over, strangling trees, suffocating naturalized plants, and preventing natural reforestation. Working with the Seattle Audubon Society, MESA began the volunteer-driven effort of removing these invasives and enhancing the habitat of Promontory Point with native species of trees, shrubs, and groundcovers. Over the years volunteer stewards, community groups, EarthCorps., schools, and corporate outreach work parties have taken on the task of restoring sites around the Point. One of the biggest projects has been the Flyway, where a King County Water Works grant funded an extensive planting plan. Another large tract that has been recently enhanced with a Washington Native Plant Society grant and Green Seattle Partnership donations is the east slope of Kingfisher Basin. To find out more about stewarded sites please visit the Under Restoration page. Donations to MESA are welcome in any size and will be used for the purchase of plants, tools, equipment, and supplies.
